PSG Officially Declared Ligue 1 Champions for the Canceled 2019-20 Season

PSG Officially Declared Ligue 1 Champions

Ligue 1 was postponed last month because of the coronavirus pandemic affecting the entire world. Currently, this deadly virus has affected more than 3.2 million and taken the lives of over 230k people. France has over 166k cases and over 24k deaths as a result of COVID-19.

PSG had played 27 games and was 12 points clear at the French Ligue 1 table with 68 points and followed by Marseille with 56 points who had played 28 games. Ligue 1 had only 10 rounds of matches left to play.

The declaration of PSG as the winners came after the French government’s announcement on Tuesday to call off both rugby and soccer seasons in the country with no plans to resume. French League President Nathalie Boy de la Tour confirmed the end of the 2019-20 season and also added that they awarded Ligue 1 championship to Paris Saint-Germain F.C.

However, that was not the case for the Netherlands Eredivisie 2019-20 season, which was ended without declaring a winner. But we think it’s because number 1, Ajax, had the same 56 points as number 2, AZ Alkmaar.

2019-20 championship will be the third consecutive title for PSG, and overall, it will be their 9th title. PSG and Marseille are on a tie on the number of titles. The only other team to have more titles is Saint-Etienne with 10.

With PSG being declared as Ligue 1 champion, they now automatically qualify for the Champions League. Second place, Marseille has also qualified, and third-place Rennes will be eligible for the qualifying rounds.

Two last-place standings, Toulouse and Amiens, were relegated to Division Two, and the leaders for that division, Lorient and second-place Lens, were promoted to Ligue1. Further, promotion playoff that is usually between the 18th team in Ligue 1 and the 3rd team in Ligue 2 was scrapped.

Boy de la Tour also added that they gave the league the chance to start again in mid-June, but the uncertainty of COVID-19 coming to an end has led to 2019-20 season termination.

Some parties thought that Ligue 1 should be allowed to end by playing a playoff system. Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas was pushing for the playoff, but that’s in the past, and his team has missed out on the Champions League because they finished in seventh place.

PSG has won each title since 2013. They only missed once when Monaco won it in 2017. The other titles for PSG were in 1986 and 1994.

The top scorer for Ligue 1 is PSG striker Kylian Mbappe for the second straight season, but he is tied with Monaco forward Wissam Ben Yedder with 18 goals. The player with a lot of assists is PSG midfielder Angel Di Maria with 14 and followed by Monaco forward Islam Slimani with 8.

Now, there are a lot of speculations on whether Liverpool, who plays in the English Premier League, will be awarded the 2019-20 title. They have waited for about 30 years. Liverpool is 25 points clear at the table from the second-place Manchester City.
